Do you know any man whom his companions love more than their own selves and their own families? A love which makes them naturally love what he loves and hate what he hates? A love due to which they are ready to sacrifice anything and everything, and suffer for days, months and years, even ready to die for him? Can such kind of love exist? Yes, without any doubt, it did exist! For a man who is known as the most successful man the world has ever seen. A man praised by manyhistorians, philosophers, scientists, professors and writers. The same man who inspired and keeps inspiring people from all parts of world and from different fields of life. He is the Prophet of God Almighty, he is none other than the truthful and trustworthy, Muhammad (may peace and blessings of God be upon him).
Talking about his life and his character, what was it about him that made people fall in love with him? Was he a magician? No. Was he a philosopher? No. He was far greater than that… A Simple man, A messenger of God. His face was like the moon, as said by a companion when a non-companion enquired. Effective yet a comfortable face to look at; a face which when a wise man saw he asserted that it cannot be the face of a liar. He had wide lips and the teeth were always clean as he loved to use miswak. He always spoke slowly for the people to understand and absorb what he said. So much that Aisha, his most loving wife, says that the listener could memorize what he has said. Whenever he was asked for advice, he did not just answer what we can call “technically correct” but also according to the questioner’s character, needs and requirements. His hair was black, except a few countable grey hairs. Quiet Young looking!
On the other side, he was so sincere that his feet used to get swollen due to prolonged voluntary (Nafl) prayers, he was most grateful to God. He, who loved to pray (salaah) the most, asked his people (Imaams) to shorten the prayers to stop small children from crying and mothers getting concerned in the Mosques. Indeed he was full of Mercy, not only to children and people but to plants, animals and the environment.
We can somewhat comprehend the love his companions had for him if we read about their attitude towards him.
Anas Ibn Malik, who was with the Prophet (peace be upon him) since child hood was only twenty when Muhammad (peace be upon him) died, says that he never touched anything softer than the touch of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Anas loved him, so much that when he saw Muhammad (peace be upon him) liking pumpkin to eat, even he started liking it for himself. This attitude is not only of one companion but of all. Yes, all the companions loved the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than anyone in their life so much so that they copied him as they have seen him.
Zaid Ibn Haritha, a slave of Prophet (peace be upon him), refused to go with his real father and uncle when they found him. He could not prefer any other man over Muhammad (peace be upon him). Zaid himself chose Muhammad (peace be upon him) over his own father and uncle, he wasn’t forced to, he wasn’t even asked to. You cannot force people to love you, can you?
Oh! How can women folk stay behind? Even they loved the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than their own fathers and sons. They enquired about the Prophet’s health before than anyone else in the battle field.
The enemies used to testify his honesty and integrity. They used to trust him more than anyone else in the whole Arab world. They knew he was an Apostle of Allah.
You will not find this kind of love in any other case than this, because you will not find a man like him and a life like he lived. Loving, caring, merciful, a king who repaired his own clothes and shoes, a leader whose decision is most respected throughout ages, the most respectable man, yet most kind and humble. The people who did not only lived in deserts but their hearts had become desert, who used to bury their own daughters alive, who used to fight for silly reasons for decades. Alexander the great passed by them and dared not to rule them and said “They are the garbage of the community”. This man – Muhammad (peace be upon him) - taught them love and compassion, rights and wrongs and made them the torch-bearer for the world. So he was loved and so do we love him. Yes… We love him.
So it is said of him “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow…”
