Shirk is associating partners with Allah. As long as we worship Allah alone and beg (call in supplication (dua)) Him alone, He might forgive our sins, Inshaa'Allah. But He will not forgive a Mushrik (someone who associates partners with Allah in worship) unless s/he repents from it. We read in Quran that Allah can forgive all our sins but not the Shirk.
“Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away.” Quran 4:116
And if someone dies doing Shirk, then Hell fire is his/her destination. Quran 5:72- “Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode.”
From the beginning of this world, people worshipped One God. The greatest sin, Shirk, was first committed by the people of Nuh (a.s). Before them, all the people from the time of Adam (as) were on Tawheed. Let’s see how the people of Nuh (as) got strayed from the straight path of Tawheed and ended up doing Shirk.
The Quran says in Surah Nuh (71:21) "Nuh said, "O my Lord! Indeed, they have disobeyed me and followed the one whose wealth and children will not increase them except in loss." And they said, "Do not leave your gods., and do not leave Wadd, or Suwa, or Yaguth, and Yauq and Nasr."
When we read the tafseer of Surah Nuh, we get to know that Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, and Yauq and Nasr were good and practicing muslims from the people of Nuh. And when they died, Shaitaan invented the thought of making their pictures out of the love which the people had for them. They did this out of the intention to remember them and do good deeds like them. But when the people who made their pictures died, other people started worshipping them by praying to them. And thus Shirk entered their lives. This is how Shaitaan used their emotions and made them worship and serve others besides Allah (SWT). They did not leave their ancestors even when Allah warned them. And so Allah destroyed them.
The following Ayat of Surah Zumar is referring to the Mushrikeen (people who associate partners in worship of Allah), of Mecca.
"Surely, the religion (i.e. Islaam, the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah." Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever." Quran (39:3)
Mushrikeen of Mecca believed that Allah is the Lord, Sustainer and Creator, but they associated others in His worship. And they used to say that we worship others only so that they will bring us near to Allah. Indeed, Allah had not sent any authority for it. And so Allah warned them through Prophet Mohammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Allah called them to Tawheed al-uloohiyyah (Tawheed in worship of Allah alone) through Tawheed ar-rububiyyah (which they belived in, that Allah is the Creator). That is, if you believe that Allah is the Rabb, then don't associate partners in His worship.
The Quran 10:31 says, Say (O Muhammad): "Who provides for you from the sky and from the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes the affairs?" They will say: "Allah." Say: "Will you not then be afraid of Allah's Punishment (for setting up rivals in worship with Allah)?"
The Quran 5:76 also says, “Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "How do you worship besides Allah something which has no power either to harm or to benefit you? But it is Allah Who is the All-Hearer, All-Knower.”
Quran is a clear Word of Allah wherein is a way of life Islaam, which Prophet Mohammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) lived. Islaam is a complete religion and the Prophet (pbuh) even said that the religion is very easy. Yet we find muslims doing things in the name of Islaam which neither the Quran nor Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) taught us, so much that the muslims today go against the teachings of Quran, knowingly and unknowingly. One of such activity in which muslims indulge in high quantity is grave worship. When such things were not allowed to Jews, Christians, People of Nuh (as), Mushrikeen of Mecca then how is it allowed for us to take our elders (who were good muslims) as protectors and helpers besides (with) Allah? Yes, visiting graves was recommended by Prophet (pbuh) but for us to remember our death and pray to Allah for them. And only Allah is All-Knowing. No one knows what he/she will earn tomorrow except Allah. And intercession is possible only in the Hereafter, not in this world! That too only those whom Allah will allow can intercede, and there can be no intercession for Mushriks (those who associate partners in Allah's worship)!
Prophet Mohammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, ...BEWARE of those who preceded you and used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship, DO NOT take graves as places of worship; I FORBID YOU to do that. [Muslim, al-Janaa’iz, 970]
How many times do we recite Surah Al-Fatiha each day? saying “You (Allah) Alone do we worship and You Alone we ask for help". Yet people, in fact Muslims, go to Baba and Dargah and ask for help, off springs, gain in business and whatever they want. Praying to those who have died is a clear Shirk. Allah says “Pray to Me and I will answer your prayer.” Then do you choose to pray to someone else other than Allah? When He is nearer to you - in knowledge - than your jugular vein? When it is He who can really benefit or harm you? You cannot claim your love for Allah and Prophet Mohammad (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) if you do not obey.
Allah said: "And invoke not besides Allah any that will neither profit you nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers). And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He will. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Quran (10:106, 107)
There is none worthy of worship except Allah. Learning, implementing and spreading Islaam is our duty. Let’s be Muslims by practice and not just by names. Let us not be of those who stand as losers in the Hereafter.
“...Allah is Sufficient as a Wali (Protector), and Allah is Sufficient as a Helper”
Quran 4:45
May Allah give us hidayat of Quran and Sunnah and May He make of the people of Jannah. Ameen.
