‘Islaah’ means to improve, correct, rectify or repair. In Islamic terminology, ‘Islaah’ means correcting a Muslim or providing more knowledge of Islam to a Muslim (Ref: Shaykh Jalaaluddin Qasmi).
Allah (swt) has made believers as an Ummah. Muslims are related to each other not by blood but by the belief of Lailaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship but Allah). Our brotherhood should be as strong as our belief in Lailaha illallah is!
It is very beautiful how Allah (swt) says that (interpretation of meaning) “the believers are to each other nothing but BROTHERS.” (Quran 49:10)
Islaah is an important part in every Muslim’s day to day life. Our relation, our attitude towards each other does affect our lives. Now, if you correct your own younger brother, won't you do it with love, affection and care for him? If you correct your own elder brother then won't you do it humbly and respectfully? We should have the same love, affection, care and respect for our brothers in Islam, if we are Believers!
There can be disagreements between us. Even Sahabas (May Allah be pleased with them) used to disagree (not on basic rules and understanding of Islaam) with each other but they never ill-treated each other. But nowadays it is not difficult to find Muslims fighting due to disagreements. The truth is that the most of the fights take place due to ego problems. There is no place for ego in Islam. There is no place for feeling of being superior or more deserving than our brothers in Islam. We should always remember that if we have something good then it is due to the Mercy of Allah (swt). Allah is our Master and there is none in the Heavens and the earth but will come to the Most-Gracious as a slave.
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No one will enter Paradise who has an atom’s-weight of arrogance in his heart.” (Narrated by Muslim, 91).
A lot of Muslims today spy on each other to expose each other’s mistakes or sins. We are not allowed to spy on each other. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) "O you who believe! Avoid much assumption. Indeed some assumption is sin. And DO NOT SPY or BACKBITE each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, you would surely hate it. And fear Allah. Indeed Allah is Oft-Returning (to mercy), Most Merciful"
(Quran 49:12)
Our aim should not be only to present the truth but also to present it in the best possible way so that it benefits the one to whom it is presented. At the same time we should always be ready to accept truth when it is presented to us. After all, a Muslim is always a learner. Our aim should always be to know what’s right and accept it irrespective of who brings it to us. And if there is a fight or misunderstanding between two Muslims, then it is the responsibility of a third believer to make peace between them as said by Allah (swt) in His Book which is the guidance for the believers (interpretation of the meaning) - "The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah so that you may receive mercy." (Quran 49:10)
Mistakes can happen from anybody and everybody. Even if somebody hurts you intentionally remember that we should repel evil with something good. Allah says to the people of virtue (those who do good and avoid bad) that:
"Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful" (Quran 24:22). Allah is Oft-Forgiving and He likes those who forgive others.
If there is any difference of opinion or misunderstanding, then we should adopt kindness by which Allah promises that He will replace enmity with love! “The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allah ordered the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly), then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend.” (Quran 41:34)
Remember, we are an Ummah. We have to work together. We should be making excuses for each other rather than picking mistakes to prove our own people wrong.
Its high time that we take account of our own hearts. Do we like for our brothers in Faith what we like for ourselves? Humility, kindness, love and respect is what we should stick to while we deal with our brothers. If your heart doesn’t feel for your brothers in Faith then indeed it’s a sign of Weak Imaan!
I would like to end with this beautiful saying, or rather teaching, of the one who is dear to Allah, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (May peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)-
The Prophet (pbuh) said: "You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you about something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam amongst yourselves"(Sahih Muslim).
